The Storybook Picnic in Unity, Maine was inspired by "Picnics des Palabras." My friend Amalia, a children's author/illustrator travels around the region of Bogota, Colombia bringing books to parks, where they spread books out on picnic quilts and read books aloud. Not only do authors have fewer opportunities for publishing books in Spanish, but kids in Central America often lack books that represent them. Amalia, along with other authors and reading volunteers introduce new books to the community. In our version, we offered books that promote cultural competency. The Waldo County Literacy Volunteers supported efforts, as did the community of Troy and Unity. Press release here. Here is some press following the event. Let's do it again!
